Washington (TDI): Pakistan’s growing strategic relevance was brought into sharp focus at the Munich Security Conference, where high-level engagements underscored Islamabad’s role in regional and global diplomacy.
During a meeting on the sidelines of the conference, Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of the Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, held detailed discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the two sides exchanged views on issues of mutual concern, including evolving global and regional security dynamics as well as counterterrorism cooperation.
Separately, US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz emphasized Pakistan’s significance in Washington’s broader strategic outlook. Speaking at the conference, he referred to South Asia as a region where tensions, particularly between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, have previously raised the specter of serious nuclear escalation, reflecting longstanding American concerns about stability in the region, Dawn reported.
Ambassador Waltz also pointed to Pakistan’s participation in multilateral frameworks. He noted that the United Nations Security Council had unanimously formed what he described as a “Board of Peace,” with Pakistan joining countries such as the United Kingdom and France in the initiative.

Highlighting Washington’s outreach to Muslim-majority nations, Waltz mentioned Pakistan alongside Turkiye and Indonesia as part of a wider network of partners. He further referenced a regional diplomatic initiative in which President Donald Trump brought together countries from the region, including Pakistan, Turkiye and Indonesia, to coordinate on shared objectives.
In addition to his meeting with Secretary Rubio, Field Marshal Munir engaged with several senior European officials and military leaders. His discussions with German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, Chancellor’s foreign and security policy adviser Gunter Sautter, and Germany’s Chief of Defence Carsten Breuer focused on contemporary security challenges, defence cooperation, and the importance of multilateral dialogue in maintaining global peace.
