Pakistani-Russian officials discuss strategic stability

Moscow, 8 February 2024 (TDI): According to the joint statement released on Thursday, Pakistan and Russian officials held consultations to discuss strategic stability, including the military use of artificial intelligence (AI).

The 14th round of the Pakistan-Russian consultative group was conducted under the chairmanship of Additional Foreign Secretary (Arms Control and Disarmament) Mohammad Kamran Akhtar and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs S.A. Ryabkov. This consultative group was initially established in 2003.

The two parties held an “in-depth exchange of views on international security and regional stability challenges.They discussed various aspects of arms control, disarmament, and non-proliferation.

Diplomats from both sides engaged on issues falling under the UN General Assembly, the Conference on Disarmament, and the International Security Committee. They also addressed other relevant international bodies, including the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

The statement highlighted extensive discussions on concerning matters including biological, space, and international information security. Additionally, they discussed new and emerging technologies, including the military use of artificial intelligence (AI).

Both sides were satisfied with “the similarity of views on the majority of issues of global strategic stability and regional security, including matters related to arms control, disarmament, and non-proliferation,” the statement added.

They expressed “readiness to continue close coordination at relevant international platforms and emphasized the importance” of regular meetings of the consultative group.

Both parties agreed to hold an upcoming meeting of the consultative group in Islamabad.
