Moscow, 27 September (TDI): A high-level Pakistani parliamentary delegation led by Senator Walid Iqbal, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Human Rights, attended an international conference commemorating Pakistan’s 75th anniversary of independence.

The ceremony was held at the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow. The Institute of Oriental Studies arranged the conference in partnership with the Embassy of Pakistan.

Senator Walid Iqbal, in his keynote presentation, emphasized the need for Pakistan-Russia collaboration. He acknowledged Russia’s support for Pakistan’s SCO membership.

Along these lines, the Senator also expressed gratitude for the Russian Federation’s help in the aftermath of Pakistan’s historic floods.

He underscored the importance of implementing cooperation agreements, such as the Pakistan Stream Gas Pipeline project, to further strengthen relations between the two countries.

He also referred to Dr. Allama Iqbal’s focus on the Asian renaissance and how it would benefit the world. He went on to say that an Asian renaissance would be impossible without Russia.

Allama Muhammad Iqbal was a Muslim poet and philosopher and Pakistan’s national poet. As a poet, he enjoys great repute in the world.

Allama Iqbal wrote Urdu and Persian poetry. His poetry is regarded as revolutionary. His vision of an independent state for the Muslims of British India served as the impetus for the establishment of Pakistan.

Russia-Pakistan Ties

In recent years, relations between Russia and Pakistan have warmed considerably in response to international changes resulting in new alliances. In 2016, the two countries conducted their first-ever joint military exercises.

Pakistan and Russia struck an agreement for the Pakistan Stream Gas pipeline from Karachi to Kasur in December 2016 and agreed on a price. Pakistan has also allowed Russia access to the Gwadar Port.

Furthermore, Pakistan marked the 70th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations with the Russian Federation on May 1, 2018.
