Pakistan to host UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Meeting

-

Islamabad, 28 August 2023(TDI): Pakistan is preparing to host a Preparatory Meeting for the forthcoming United Nations (UN) Peacekeeping Ministerial in Islamabad.

This significant event, scheduled for August 30-31, 2023, revolves around the central theme of “Ensuring the Safety and Security of UN Peacekeepers.”

The Preparatory Meeting will feature keynote addresses delivered by Pakistan’s Foreign Minister and Defence Minister, emphasizing Pakistan’s commitment to UN peacekeeping.

It is expected to draw participation from Member States represented in the UN Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations, which comprises 156 countries. In addition to member states, the meeting will welcome the presence of local and international experts.

Senior officials from the UN Secretariat, including the Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, the Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support, and the UN Police Advisor will also attend.

During the two-day event, panel discussions will delve into critical sub-themes.

These include addressing capacity-building needs, exploring the safety and security of UN peacekeepers within the bounds of international law, enhancing the medical capabilities of UN peacekeeping missions, and harnessing technology and strategic communication.

The meeting will provide specialized insights, such as an expert presentation on the threats posed by Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and a briefing on the system of pledging.

Pakistan’s role in UN peacekeeping is substantial. The country is among the largest troop contributors globally, with a history dating back to 1960 when it first engaged in UN peacekeeping missions.

Pakistan has deployed over 230,000 men and women to 46 UN peacekeeping missions across multiple continents.

Tragically, 172 Pakistani peacekeepers have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Pakistan’s hosting of the Preparatory Meeting underscores its unwavering commitment to maintaining security and stability in conflict zones worldwide.

This Preparatory Meeting is a vital precursor to the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial, which is slated to be held in Ghana in December 2023. The Ministerial, a biennial high-level event, will see the participation of Foreign and Defence ministers.

Preceded by a series of four preparatory meetings, including the one hosted by Pakistan, it aims to drive concrete improvements in UN peacekeeping operations.
