Baghdad, 28 August 2023 (TDI): Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted a ceremony, commemorating the 65th anniversary of the establishment of Iraqi-Chinese diplomatic relations at the Ministry’s headquarters in Baghdad on August 27.
During the ceremony, Iraq’s Undersecretary for Bilateral Relations, Ambassador Muhammad Hussein, conveyed his felicitations to the government and people of the friendly Republic of China, wishing the nation further progress and prosperity.
While pointing out the rich and unique ancient civilizations of both nations, the Ambassador underscored the historical ties between Iraq and China.
The diplomatic relations between the two nations, established in 1958 have witnessed substantial growth and progress, following the principles of respect and mutual benefit.
Also, both countries have witnessed fruitful cooperation in many political, economic, cultural, health, education, and other fields.
Trade and Investment cooperation
Ambassador Muhammad Hussein highlighted that China is Iraq’s largest trading partner, and this economic cooperation has strengthened the mutual political trust and collaboration between the two sides.
He mentioned that in 2022, the volume of direct trade exchange between the two countries reached its highest level compared to other countries.
The Ambassador underscored the “Iraqi government’s interest” in forging closer bilateral ties and meaningful cooperation with the People’s Republic of China.
He added that the country would benefit from China’s capabilities and expertise to implement reforms, programs, and projects adopted by the Iraqi government, sharply focused on the development of the nation.
For his part, the Chinese Ambassador to Iraq, Cui Wei, expressed his sincere thanks to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein and the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs for holding this ceremony, which signifies Iraq’s interest in fostering Sino-Iraqi relations.

The Chinese Ambassador mentioned that Iraq is the third-largest trading partner of China in the West Asia and North Africa region, making it one of the largest investment destinations for China abroad and the main market for engineering contracting.
Moreover, China is the largest foreign buyer of Iraqi oil. He also expressed China’s desire to deepen friendly communication and cooperation in various fields between Baghdad and Beijing.
