Colombo, 13 August 2022 (TDI): Pakistan Navy ship (PNS) “Taimur” docked in the port of Colombo on its way from China to Pakistan.

The Sri Lankan Navy received the ship and welcomed it in their traditional naval customs.  Captain M. Yasir Tahir is in charge of the 134-meter-long ship, which has 169 crew members.

In the meantime, the Commanding Officer of PNS Taimur scheduled a call on Commander Western Naval Area at the Western Naval Command Headquarters today.

The ship will remain on the island until 15th August. The ship’s crew will participate in several programs organized by the Sri Lanka Navy. This will promote cooperation and goodwill between the two navies.

PNS Taimur will also perform a naval drill with the Sri Lanka Navy. When it departs on the 15th of August, the exercise will be carried out in western waters.

Before that, PNS Tughril, an identical warship belonging to the Pakistan Navy, arrived in Sri Lanka on an official visit in December 2021. It conducted a successful naval exercise with SLNS Sindurala off the western coast on 16th December.

Sri Lanka Navy said that naval exercises with regional navies would enable each partner to overcome common maritime challenges. This would only happen through enhanced cooperation among the navies in the future.

It is also reported that the Warship has been made at China’s Dong port in Shanghai and is expected to reach Pakistan on 15 August. Earlier, the warship participated in exercises in Malaysia and Cambodia 

Pakistan and Sri Lanka Ties

The relations between Pakistan and Sri Lanka date back to the formative years of the two countries. The two countries established their friendship in 1948 when Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Senanayake visited Pakistan.

Pakistan and Sri Lanka are both Commonwealth republics. There is a Pakistani High Commission in Colombo and a Sri Lankan High Commission in Islamabad.

Apart from traditional military assistance to Sri Lanka, Pakistan also offered to train Sri Lanka Police and State Intelligence Service (SIS) officers.

Latest Developments

The Taimur warship is also reportedly participating in the joint exercise with the Sri Lankan Navy in the western seas.

This docking of a Chinese-made Pakistan warship at the Sri Lankan port came after recently a Chinese research vessel arrived at the Hambantota port. This raised concerns from India and the US.
