Rawalpindi, 22 July 2022 (TDI): Pakistan dispatched emergency relief assistance to Kandahar, Eastern Afghanistan from Nur Khan Air Base in Rawalpindi. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari participated in the ceremony of dispatching Relief assistance to Afghanistan.

The relief to Kandahar will provide support to eastern Afghanistan in the aftermath of devastating flash floods caused by torrential rains.
The Foreign Minister stated that Pakistan stands in solidarity with the people of Afghanistan during these difficult times. He stated that the relief efforts are a humble testament to the two countries’ fraternal bonds.
The Foreign Minister further mentioned Pakistan’s relations with Afghanistan and highlighted that the two countries continue to be engaged to devise a facilitative trade and transit regime and increase connectivity.
Pakistani Foreign Minister underlined Pakistan’s resolve to continue assistance and relief efforts for the people of Afghanistan.
In addition, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Afghan Embassy, the Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority, and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attended the ceremony.
Floods In Afghanistan
Over the past week, Afghanistan has experienced heavy rain and flooding. Thus, the country has been affected by flash flooding in the Central, Eastern, Southern, and South-Eastern Regions.
It has been reported that at least 39 people have died across five provinces since 5 July. Namely in Uruzgan, Ghazni, Nuristan, Paktya, and Zabul provinces. A number of flash floods have hit Afghanistan’s eastern region in less than a month.
Heavy rains have destroyed approximately 2,900 houses. That is a tenfold increase from the previous reporting period and has also disrupted livelihoods. Additionally, roads and bridges have also been impacted by heavy floods.
Furthermore, families that have been assessed, reported the need for emergency shelter, non-food items, food and water, sanitation, and hygiene support.
Noteworthy, Pakistan has also conveyed condolences to Afghanistan over the loss of life that resulted from an earthquake in Paktika province and its adjoining areas and torrential floods in different provinces across the country.
