Pakistan Demands Immediate Ceasefire in Sudan

United Nations (TDI): At the UNSC briefing on Sudan, Ambassador Munir Akram presented Pakistan’s stance, urging an immediate cessation of hostilities and an unconditional ceasefire in the country.

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Munir Akram, said that it is evident that this conflict cannot be resolved militarily, as prolonged fighting will only lead to catastrophic outcomes, including huge human suffering and devastating consequences for the Sudanese people.

He remarked, “At least 12 million people have been displaced; 3 million have sought refuge in fragile neighboring states. The conflict also has serious implications for the entire region, including South Sudan.”

He also highlighted the critical humanitarian crisis, especially in the El-Fashar and Zamzam camps, calling for urgent action to address the suffering and condemning the violence against civilians.

He called on both sides to adhere to the Jeddah Declaration on the Protection of Civilians.

Additionally, he firmly denounced the signing of a charter by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their allies to create a parallel governing body in Sudan.

Such actions, which violate the principles of the UN Charter, only exacerbate the conflict and undermine efforts for peace and stability, he said.

“We endorse the implementation of the Government of Sudan’s National Plan for the Protection of Civilians, which has been submitted to the Security Council.”№

He said that Pakistan commends the Sudanese government’s post-war roadmap and its effort to revive the political process.

Akram added that the appointment of an independent Prime Minister and formation of an independent national technocrat government to oversee the transnational period could be steps in a positive direction.”

He said the we also back all efforts aimed at achieving peace and stability in Sudan, and these initiatives must be consolidated under UN auspices and the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for stability.

The conflict in Sudan represents a power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which began after Omar al-Bashir’s 2019 ousting.

The crisis reflects deeper issues of governance, ethnic tensions, and economic inequality in Sudan.

Disagreements over integrating the RSF into the SAF and control over resources have fueled violence.

International mediation efforts have faced challenges, with both sides accused of human rights violations.
