Pakistan at the Center: World Leaders Praise Role in US–Iran Ceasefire

Islamabad (TDI): Global leaders and officials from various countries have acknowledged Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts in helping facilitate a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

US President Donald Trump announced on his social platform that a temporary ceasefire had been agreed upon following discussions with Pakistan’s leadership, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir. The agreement came shortly before a deadline set by the US president, during which he had issued a stark warning about the potential consequences if demands were not met.

Following the announcement, Prime Minister Sharif confirmed that Iran, the United States, and their respective allies had agreed to an immediate ceasefire across multiple regions, including Lebanon. He welcomed the development and invited delegations from both countries to Islamabad for further negotiations aimed at reaching a comprehensive settlement.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s leadership, thanking Prime Minister Sharif and Field Marshal Munir for their role in facilitating dialogue. He indicated that Iran would halt defensive operations if attacks against the country were stopped, signaling conditional support for maintaining the ceasefire.

International reactions were largely positive. The UK High Commissioner to Pakistan praised Islamabad’s quiet but effective diplomatic role. New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts alongside other regional actors, while emphasizing support for continued peace initiatives.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong welcomed the ceasefire, highlighting the economic and humanitarian consequences of prolonged conflict. They also thanked Pakistan and other mediating countries for their involvement.

Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev credited the agreement to the combined goodwill of involved parties, while specifically noting Pakistan’s mediating role. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also commended Pakistan’s diplomacy, describing it as balanced and responsible.

The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, through his spokesperson, welcomed the ceasefire and urged all parties to work toward a durable peace, expressing appreciation for Pakistan’s contribution.

European leaders and officials echoed similar sentiments. Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz thanked Pakistan for its mediation efforts, while Norway’s Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide praised the role of Pakistan, Egypt, and Türkiye in supporting peace. EU officials, including Kaja Kallas, along with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa, also acknowledged Pakistan’s involvement.

Canada’s High Commissioner to Pakistan expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Sharif for helping create an opportunity for dialogue, and Sweden’s Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard similarly recognized Pakistan’s role in facilitating discussions.

Overall, the ceasefire has been widely welcomed internationally, with many leaders emphasizing the importance of continued negotiations to achieve a lasting resolution to the conflict.
