Islamabad (TDI): Pakistan’s top leadership has congratulated Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its leader, Tarique Rahman, on securing a decisive victory in Bangladesh’s general elections.
In separate statements on Friday, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended their felicitations to the BNP following its triumph in the national polls, in which the party reportedly secured a commanding majority in the 300-seat Jatiya Sangsad.
President Zardari congratulated the BNP leadership and the people of Bangladesh on the successful conduct of the elections, which saw broad participation across the South Asian nation.
He reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Bangladesh’s democratic aspirations and expressed optimism that the new government in Dhaka would foster “stronger, balanced and mutually respectful engagement” between the two countries.
Highlighting the historic ties between the two Muslim-majority neighbors, Zardari emphasized Pakistan’s desire to deepen cooperation across trade, defense, cultural exchanges and regional forums.

He expressed hope that a stable political environment in Bangladesh would contribute positively to South Asian cooperation after years of regional challenges.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his message on social media platform X, offered “warmest felicitations” to Tarique Rahman on leading the BNP to what he described as a “resounding victory.” He also congratulated the Bangladeshi electorate on an orderly and peaceful electoral process.
Sharif stressed his anticipation of working closely with Bangladesh’s incoming leadership to strengthen “historic, brotherly and multifaceted bilateral relations.”
He pointed to shared goals of peace, stability, and development in South Asia and beyond, underscoring the importance Islamabad places on its partnership with Dhaka.
Prior to the 2026 elections, Bangladesh had undergone significant domestic upheaval, including the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024 and a transitional period, led by interim chief advisor, Muhammad Yunus.
International reactions to the BNP victory have also poured in from other capitals, including Washington and New Delhi, signaling global interest in Dhaka’s new political direction.
