Pakistan More Confident to Host US-Iran Talks After Four-way FMs Meeting in Islamabad

Islamabad (TDI): “Pakistan has  a very important relationship with the United States,” said the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Pakistan as he spoke to media after the quadrilateral consultations came to end, on Sunday.

The foreign ministers of Egypt, Turkiye and Saudi Arabia were hosted in Islamabad by DPM/FM Ishaq Dar, to discuss “the possible ways to bring an early and permanent end to the war in the region,” after Pakistan’s initiative to facilitate and host US-Iran talks was endorsed by both countries.

As the consultative meeting of the four foreign ministers concluded, Dar said Pakistan has the support of not just these four countries but many others; including China and the United Nations Secretary General.

The consultative meeting was the second such coming-together of foreign ministers of Egypt, Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan after Riyadh hosted the first on March 19.

Though a clear plan of action is too early to be released, Islamabad has positioned itself more confidently to facilitate and host US-Iran talks sooner, after the quadrilateral consultation; which has demonstrated the confidence of major regional stakeholders in Pakistan.

As Dar put it, in addition to separate bilateral meetings, the four foreign ministers sat down together for a “detailed and in-depth discussion on the current regional situation,” seeking a “lasting settlement;” something Pakistan has stressed earlier too, that it looks to facilitate talks that not just bring an end to the ongoing military conflict but seek long-term solutions.

The impact of the Iran war has been most immediately felt in countries in geographical proximity; especially the Middle East and the Gulf region. And an ownership of any dialogue mechanism by these direct stakeholders guarantees better outcomes.

Islamabad hopes to host US-Iran talks in the coming days, and until then, the quadrilateral meeting has established itself as a meeting of consensus and a will to facilitate direct talks between the countries at war.
