Astana, 21 May 2024 (TDI): The One-China principle is the foundation of peace across the Taiwan Strait, according to remarks made by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday.
He expressed these comments while attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs meeting in Astana. His purpose was to clarify China’s firm stance on the taking of office by the new leader of the Taiwan region.
Moreover, Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized that the One-China concept is inviolable.
According to Wang, regardless of any shifts in the political landscape of Taiwan, the indisputable historical and legal reality is that there exists only one China globally, and Taiwan is an integral component of China.
Furthermore, Wang observed that political leaders and individuals from various countries, including SCO member states, have recently expressed their support for China’s stance against “Taiwan independence” and their commitment to the principle. This reaffirms the unwavering global consensus on adhering to the principle.
According to him, anyone who tries to dispute the One-China principle would surely be unsuccessful. Whenever they provoke conflict, the international community’s agreement on maintaining the principle will strengthen even more, and the comprehension and endorsement of China’s stance will accumulate, he stated.
He further added that this is the reality where a righteous cause receives ample support while an unjust cause receives minimal support.
Additionally, Wang stated that any efforts by separatists to achieve “Taiwan independence” are destined to be unsuccessful.
Moreover, the 1943 Cairo Declaration and the 1945 Potsdam Proclamation explicitly stated that Taiwan, which was taken by Japan, should be returned to China as it is a Chinese territory.
According to Wang, these records, which have legal significance on a global scale, were an essential component of the international system established after World War II and serve as the shared recollection of the worldwide community.
The One-China idea, the Chinese foreign minister underlined, is the fundamental prerequisite and political foundation for China to build and maintain relations with all other countries. Moreover, it acts as the cornerstone for preserving harmony across the Taiwan Strait.
Additionally, Wang asserts that the reunification of China is an ongoing and unabated tendency.

The speaker asserted that the Chinese people hold a firm belief that their nation cannot be split up, their territory cannot be divided, their country cannot become unstable, and their civilization cannot be destroyed.
This view is based on an internal logic and historical inevitability that will eventually result in the reunification of China, he added.
Lastly, he claimed that China is the internal party to the Taiwan dispute. All Chinese people share the goal for China to reunite fully, and this is an unavoidable historical development that cannot be impeded by outside forces.
