OIC, Turkish Mission Champion Climate Action at Environment Day Seminar in Jeddah

Jeddah (TDI): The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) hosted a special event at its headquarters to mark World Environment Day.

The event brought together diplomats, policymakers, and institutional representatives in a collective call for stronger environmental stewardship across the Islamic world and beyond.

The event, organized in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of Türkiye to the OIC, featured a specialized seminar that drew permanent representatives from multiple OIC Member States, alongside speakers from the organization’s subsidiary and specialized organs.

At the heart of the seminar was a showcase of the environmental efforts and innovative sustainability initiatives being led by OIC Member States.

Speakers highlighted how member nations are increasingly integrating environmental protection into their national development agendas, even as they navigate the economic and social pressures common across the developing world.

The event also served as a platform to draw renewed international attention to the mounting environmental challenges threatening the planet; all of which disproportionately affect many OIC member countries spanning the Middle East, Africa, and Central and Southeast Asia.

Discussions focused on practical pathways to mitigate the impact of these escalating risks, encouraging Member States to deepen cooperation and share best practices.

Türkiye’s co-hosting role underscores Ankara’s growing engagement on climate and environmental diplomacy within multilateral Islamic forums, building on its broader international commitments to green transition and sustainable development.

The OIC General Secretariat framed the event as part of its ongoing commitment to recognizing and amplifying United Nations International Days; using such occasions to align the priorities of its 57 Member States with global frameworks and to reinforce collective responsibility toward a sustainable environmental future for generations to come.

World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5 under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach.

This year’s observance in Jeddah signals the OIC’s intent to position itself as an active institutional voice in the worldwide conversation on climate action and ecological preservation.
