North Korean missiles landed in Ukraine, says UN experts

Kyiv, 30 April 2024 (TDI): United Nations experts say, North Korean Missiles were fired in Ukraine back in January. The missile landed in the city of Kharkiv back on Jan 02.

The missile debris had helped in its identification. It is from North Korea’s Hwasong-11 ballistic series. This finding constitutes a violation of the arms embargo currently placed on North Korea.

Formally known as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), North Korea has been under UN sanctions for its ballistic missile and nuclear programs since 2006, and those measures have been strengthened over the years.

A team of three observers traveled to Ukraine to inspect the debris. In their latest report to the Committee dated April 25th, it was confirmed that the missile wasn’t of Russian origin.

Information on the trajectory provided by Ukrainian authorities indicates it was launched within the territory of the Russian Federation,” they wrote in an April 25 report to the Security Council’s North Korea sanctions committee.

Such a location, if the missile was under the control of Russian forces, would probably indicate procurement by nationals of the Russian Federation,” UN observers said.

Following the North Korean Missiles fired in Ukraine, on January 2nd attack in Kharkiv, local prosecutors displayed missile fragments to the media, suggesting they differed from Russian models and potentially originated from North Korea.

Accusations of North Korean arms transfers to Russia for use in Ukraine have been levied by the US and other countries. Both Russia and North Korea however denied the claims. The attack killed at least three people and injured 62.

The Russian and North Korean missions to the United Nations in New York did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report by the sanctions monitors.

The UN monitors said the Hwasong-11 series ballistic missiles were first publicly tested by Pyongyang in 2019.
