Ottawa, 26 August 2022 (TDI): Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is visiting Canada. While there, he will visit the Canadian Arctic with the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau.

During his visit, the NATO Secretary-General will underline the growing strategic importance of the High North for North America, NATO, and Euro-Atlantic security.

While meeting with Prime Minister Trudeau, Jens Stoltenberg reiterated that Russia’s war in Ukraine had changed the global security landscape. In reaction, NATO was stronger than ever.

The agenda of the visit is to discuss international security, Russia’s illegal invasion, and climate change along with meeting with the Canadians who make contributions to NATO, possible.

The Secretary-General also toured the Cambridge Bay North Warning System (NWS) site with the Canadian Prime Minister. Cambridge Bay is a hamlet located on Victoria Island in the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut, Canada.

It is the largest settlement on Victoria Island. Moreover, the NWS provides aerospace surveillance of the northern approaches to North America in support of the NORAD mission.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command or NORAD is a United States (US) and Canada bi-national organization that is assigned with the missions of aerospace control, aerospace warning, and maritime warning for North America.

Aside from that, Secretary-General Stoltenberg also visited the Canadian High Arctic Research Station.

The researchers at Station are doing groundbreaking work to understand the impacts of climate change and guide the way in innovation in Arctic science and technology.
