New York (TDI): During the recent UN Security Council meeting addressing the 1267/1989/2253 Committee, 1373 Committee, and 1540 Committee, Ambassador James Kariuki, the Deputy Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the UN delievered a statement.
“The OPCW IIT released its report earlier this year on the devastating chemical weapons attack in Marea, Syria in 2015, which held Da’esh responsible,” he said in his statement.
Additionally, Ambassador James stated that the threat posed by terrorists and non-state actors is constantly evolving. There are terrorist organizations all across the world, such as affiliates of Daesh and Al-Qaeda.

In order to safeguard our population, stop the spread of terrorism, and guarantee the safe and secure growth of the chemical, nuclear, and life sciences sectors worldwide, he added, it is imperative that we decide to cooperate in these committees.
“First, the 1267 monitoring team’s analysis of the evolving threat and effectiveness of sanctions remains a crucial resource for member states,” Ambassador James added.
Additionally, he stated that the Ombudsperson’s office still provides a strong and impartial procedure for contesting designations.
He added that the UK is happy that their mandate was renewed earlier this year and that the Council now acknowledges sexual and gender-based violence as terrorist tactics and reasons for inclusion in the regime’s list.

Additionally, he proposed that “Second, the 1540 Committee has secured progress on technical reference guide development and monitoring implementation.”
Third, he added, the involvement of the commercial sector, civil society, and technical experts has greatly benefited the work of the Counterterrorism Committee.
“Colleagues, these committees have one common goal: to address the significant and ongoing threat to international peace and security posed by terrorist organizations and non-state actors,” he said in closing remarks.
