Association of Southeast Asian Nations

Established in 1967, ten Southeast Asian nations make up this economic partnership. Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam are the member countries.

The population of Southeast Asian countries was approximately 655 million in 2019, which represented 8.5 percent of the global population, according to government data (2020).

It uses a comprehensive strategy for “conflict resolution” built on consultation, agreement, and non-interference. Also, it maintains a global network of alliances and is a significant member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Today, the organization is a major player in regional trade and security issues, is active in many international issues, and is the host of diplomatic missions around the globe.

ASEAN and Pakistan

Pakistan received the designation of Sectoral Dialogue Partner (SDP) from ASEAN in 1997. Commerce, industry, investment, environment, science & technology, drugs & narcotics, tourism, & human resource development are all covered by the ASEAN-Pakistan SDP.

Other areas of collaboration between Pakistan and ASEAN nations include agriculture research, energy, transport, energy, communications, intelligence and information exchange, and culture, education, and the arts.

In addition, Pakistan has suggested working together in the areas of information technology, agricultural research, and transportation and communication.

It is highly possible and advantageous for both parties to increase trade and investment between Pakistan and the Southeast Asian nations. The degree of complementarity between the two sides is substantial.
