Vilnius, 12 September 2023 (TDI): Gabrielius Landsbergis, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Lithuania held a meeting with Ambassadors of the European Union (EU) in Vilnius. They engaged in vital discussions concerning EU foreign policy & Ukraine support.

Minister Landsbergis voiced his unwavering support for the shared objective of the Spanish Presidency of the EU Council with the intent to fortify unity in the face of escalating geopolitical tensions.

He underscored the undeniable link between Ukraine’s decisive victory over Russia’s aggression and the security and stability of Ukraine and the entirety of Europe.

Landsbergis highlighted the need for a strategic approach to bolster Ukraine, ensuring it receives the necessary resources on the battlefield.

Additionally, Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis highlighted the profound impact that the strategic decisions taken by Western partners could have on global stability, especially in regions with emerging hot spots, acting as a litmus test for Western geopolitical strength.

It is pertinent to note that the scope of discussions extended well beyond Ukraine, encompassing the European aspirations of Ukraine as well as Moldova and other EU partners.

Landsbergis underscored that, by year’s end, the EU must make pivotal determinations regarding the integration process with Ukraine and Moldova.

He emphasized the EU’s unique approach, firmly rooted in values and merits, distinguishing it as one of the EU’s most outstanding geopolitical instruments.

The Foreign Minister of Lithuania further stated that following a comprehensive evaluation of reform progress in Ukraine and Moldova, both nations might promptly receive invitations to initiate accession negotiations in December.

He simultaneously underscored the pivotal role of the Western Balkan countries in the broader enlargement discourse. 

Furthermore, in anticipation of the upcoming NATO summit in Washington, he accentuated the paramount significance of Ukraine’s seamless integration into NATO, setting the stage for critical deliberations on the prevailing situation & subsequent actions.

Moreover, the meeting delved deeply into the meticulous implementation of sanctions against Russia and Belarus. Lithuania’s proactive measures to effectively counter the evasion tactics employed by these nations emerged as a central topic of discussion.

This gathering, orchestrated by the Embassy of the Spanish Presidency of the EU Council, was dedicated to four critical priorities.

They are rejuvenating the EU industry, advancing ecological transitions, championing social and economic justice, and fortifying European unity.
