Moscow, 4 April 2023 (TDI): Foreign Minister of Russia, Sergey Lavrov spoke with the United States (US) Secretary of State, Antony Blinken by phone call initiated by the US side.

During the conversation, Blinken discussed Evan Gershkovich, an American citizen imprisoned in Russia on espionage charges. He raised his concerns about Gershkovich’s detention.

In his response, Foreign Minister Lavrov emphasized the need to respect Russian authorities’ decisions under Russian legislation and international obligations.

He further stated that the controversy created by officials in Washington and the Western media with the intent to give this case a political twist is unacceptable.

Lavrov notified Secretary Blinken that Gershkovich had been apprehended. He was seeking confidential information that was a state secret under the guise of his journalistic credentials.

The court will decide the future fate of this American citizen in light of the circumstances surrounding his illegal activity. According to the established protocol, the US Embassy in Moscow has been informed of his detention appropriately.

He remarked that the Russian Federation is a law-abiding government that respects the rights of all individuals, including foreign citizens.

The Russian authorities are optimistic that this matter will be resolved justly and legally. The country reaffirms its commitment to international law.

According to Lavrov, Gershkovich will be given a fair trial and have access to all essential legal assistance.

He asserted that the Russian Federation expects the United States will respect its sovereignty and the decisions of its authorities. Any attempt to politicize or utilize this case for another purpose would be unacceptable.

He also states that Russia believes the principles of justice and fairness must be upheld during the trial. It will not accept any attempts to undermine the integrity of its legal system.
