Phnom Penh, 2 May 2023 (TDI): On the invitation of Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia, Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith, President of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, set to visit the Kingdom of Cambodia from 04 to 06 May 2023.

Sisoulith will meet the King of Cambodia, Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, at a Royal Audience at the Royal Palace during the State Visit, following the agenda.

Samdech Vibol Sena Pheakdei Say Chhum, President of the Senate, and Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei Heng Samrin, President of the National Assembly, will also pay Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith polite visits.

Hun Sen, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, and Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith will meet privately to discuss further ways to advance their cooperation and some regional and global challenges.

Sisoulith will place tributes at the Independence Monument and the Royal Memorial Statue of the late King-Father of Cambodia, Norodom Sihanouk “PREAH BOROM RATANAK KAUDH.”

Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith will be attending the 12th ASEAN Para Games opening ceremony of the 12th ASEAN Para Games and the 32nd Southeast Asian Olympics at the Morodok Techo National Stadium, which Cambodia will be hosting from May 5 to May 17, 2023.

Sisoulith’s state visit would further solidify the already strong ties, neighborly relations, bonds of brotherhood, and Comprehensive and Long-Lasting Strategic Partnership for the mutual good of the two peoples.

Cambodia and Laos have a long history of cultural, political, and economic ties. They share borders, and their peoples have similar linguistic, religious, and cultural roots.
After gaining independence from France in the 1950s, both Cambodia and Laos underwent periods of turmoil and political instability.
During the Cold War, Cambodia and Laos aligned with the Soviet Union and received Moscow’s significant economic and military support.
However, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, both countries turned towards economic liberalization and sought to attract foreign investment.
Today, Cambodia and Laos enjoy close diplomatic relations, with regular visits between their respective leaders.
Both countries have also pursued regional integration through organizations such as ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations).
Despite tensions over border disputes and other issues, relations between Cambodia and Laos are generally characterized by cooperation and mutual respect.
Both countries are working to improve their infrastructure, increase cross-border trade and investment, and promote tourism and cultural exchange.
