Washington, D.C, 14 July 2023(TDI): Kazakhstan delegate bolsters bilateral ties in Washington, from July 12-13 while wrapping up a fruitful working trip.

The delegates were Aigul Kuspan, chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Security of the Mazhilis of Kazakhstan’s Parliament, and Kairat Umarov, first deputy minister of foreign affairs.

During the talks at the White House and State Department, it became obvious that they had strong common interest in politics, security, and trade.

The Kazakh team gave thorough updates on the President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev-led reforms. They laid focus on the recently signed Law on the Return of Illegally Acquired Assets to the State.

The U.S. partners expressed their gratitude for the prompt adoption of democratic reforms and vowed steadfast support for successful implementation.

Furthermore, laying the groundwork for future collaboration in this critical area, the Kazakh delegation also discussed the deliberate implementation of the Head of State’s decision to create the International Agency for Biological Safety.

Bilateral trade relations

Meetings with influential members of the U.S. Congress, such as Michael McCaul, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Jimmy Panetta and Robert Aderholt, Co-Chairs of the prestigious “Friends of Kazakhstan” Caucus, foregrounded the urgent need to accelerate the development of long-term normal trade relations between Kazakhstan and the USA.

Recognizing the Jackson-Vanik amendment’s potential to obstruct the two countries’ economic cooperation, both sides vehemently argued for its repeal.

KazAID-USAID partnership

Through in-depth conversations with the Agency’s leadership, the Kazakh team looked into the prospects of the KazAID-USAID collaboration. These exchanges revealed a shared desire to support the expansion of the Trans-Caspian route and Kazakhstan’s shift to sustainable energy.
