Jordan’s King Abdullah II Makes Historic Visit to Uzbekistan

Samarkand (TDI): King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein of Jordan arrived in Uzbekistan on a historic state visit at the invitation of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, marking the first summit between the two nations since the establishment of diplomatic relations.

The two leaders met at the Samarkand Congress Center, where they held extensive talks covering a wide range of issues. Discussions focused on strengthening political dialogue, promoting cultural and humanitarian exchanges, and expanding cooperation in trade, investment, and economic development. They also exchanged views on pressing regional and international matters.

Both sides agreed that this visit would open a new chapter in Uzbek-Jordanian relations, laying the foundation for a comprehensive partnership. The leaders highlighted the deep bonds of friendship and shared reform agendas between their countries, while also reaffirming mutual support for initiatives within the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and other global platforms.

Particular emphasis was placed on boosting trade volumes and carrying forward joint investment projects. Plans were set in motion to create an intergovernmental commission and a business council, with their inaugural meetings expected later this year. A joint business forum will also be organized to link entrepreneurs and leading companies from both countries.

The two sides reached agreements to strengthen cooperation in areas such as the chemical and textile industries, smart agriculture, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, geology, and tourism. Proposals were also made to enhance cultural, educational, and tourism exchanges, including culture weeks, concerts, exhibitions, and research collaborations between Islamic studies institutions.

President Mirziyoyev praised King Abdullah II’s “Aqaba Process,” an initiative launched a decade ago, and suggested that one of its future sessions could be hosted in Samarkand. Leaders also underlined the importance of launching direct flights between Tashkent and Amman and moving toward a visa-free regime to stimulate tourism and business exchanges.

The visit concluded with the signing of 15 bilateral agreements, including treaties on extradition, investment protection, cooperation in higher education, tourism, agriculture, veterinary medicine, air transport, plant protection, and religious affairs.

In a symbolic gesture, King Abdullah II awarded President Mirziyoyev the Order of Al Nahda (“Renaissance”), Jordan’s highest state honor. Accepting the award, President Mirziyoyev said it was a mark of respect and recognition of joint efforts to advance cooperation, adding that it would stand as a testament to the growing friendship between the peoples of Uzbekistan and Jordan.
