Revival of Golan Heights Deal a Priority, Not Abraham Accords: Syrian President

Damascus (TDI): Syrian President Ahmed al Sharaa said that joining Abraham Accords is not on the table for Syria, instead he seeks the revival of the 1974 Golan Heights deal.

In comments published by Saudi magazine Al-Majalla, al Sharaa said that his country wants peace and believes in a “zero problems” approach as far as neighbors are concerned.

About a non-existent possibility of joining the Abraham Accords of 2020, the Syrian President said that Syria’s relations with Israel differ from other countries of the region, by which he meant that there is an active territorial dispute over Golan Heights.

“The accords were signed with states that had no occupied land or direct conflicts with Israel. Syria’s situation is different; we have the Golan Heights under occupation,” he said.

Since coming to power in January in an interim set-up filling in the vacuum created by the flight of former Syrial ruler Bashar al Assad, al Sharaa has maintained a position over Golan Heights and has brought it up multiple times.

Despite the United States lifting all sanctions from the conflict-ridden country in a move that gathered mixed responses from international affairs analysts, the Syrian President has not displayed any flexibility in his comments over entering into the Accords, unless Southern Syria sees peace.

Abraham Accords were brokered by Trump himself during his first presidency and United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco entered into normalization of ties with Israel.

Since reassuming office, Trump has hinted on numerous occasions that he seeks to expand the Accords and wants other Arab countries to also join but heightened emotions and rage over Gaza among the Muslim countries of the region have hindered any such possibility.

Since al Sharaa became the President, Israel has openly struck parts of Southern Syria and even the military headquarters in the capital – putting the rift out in the open.
