Tokyo, 13 June 2023 (TDI):  Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has issued a heartfelt condolence letter to Giorgia Meloni, President of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic, following the passing of Senator Silvio Berlusconi, ex-Prime Minister, on June 12.

Prime Minister Kishida expressed his deep sadness and conveyed condolences on behalf of the Government and the people of Japan.

In his letter, Kishida underscored his profound respect for Senator Berlusconi’s exceptional commitment to fostering Japanese-Italian relations.

Berlusconi, a four-term President of the Council of Ministers, was notably present at the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit during his mandate. His support following the devastating Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 was particularly acknowledged.

Japan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Yoshimasa Hayashi, also extended his condolences to the Italian Republic and its people, in a letter to Antonio Tajani, Vice-President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Italian Republic.

Minister Hayashi expressed his wish that the bereaved family and Minister Tajani, a long-term colleague of Senator Berlusconi, will find solace in their time of grief.

Both leaders praised the Senator’s significant contribution to addressing international community challenges, notably through his initiatives at various summits. His untimely passing marks the end of an era, but his profound impact on Italy and the world will remain.

Japan and Italy enjoy a long-standing relationship built on mutual respect and cooperation.
