Tokyo, 8 December 2021 (TDI): The STS Forum Latin America and the Caribbean High-Level Conference was held On December 8. It was held in Mexico City in a hybrid format. The theme of the conference was Science and Technology Diplomacy. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, the Foreign Minister of Japan represented his country at the conference.
The Japanese Foreign Minister issued a video message during the opening session of the conference. During the video message, he gave an overview of the collaboration in the field of technology and science between Latin America, Japan, and the Caribbean region. In addition, He discussed cooperation from the perspective of the three dimensions of science and technology diplomacy.
Minister Hayashi communicated his hope for further enriching the collaboration between Japan and the region by efficiently utilizing the STS Forum. The STS Forum, primarily plays an important role as the “network of networks”.
It focuses on making the networks amongst the government, industry, as well as academia in each country to evolve into more closely linked to the regional as well as the global multi-layered networks.
Science and Technology Diplomacy
Science Diplomacy, Techplomacy, Innovation Diplomacy, SciTech Diplomacy and STI Diplomacy are all various ways of mentioning the same thing i.e. the use of technological, scientific, and academic collaborations among societies, countries, and regions to address common issues along with building sound and mutually beneficial international partnerships.
Science and Technology in Society Forum
The STS Forum is the Science and Technology in Society Forum. The STS forum was established in 2004. It aims to serve as a platform for world leaders in the fields of academia, policy-making, and industries to gather and discuss ways to deal with science and technology issues from a long-term perspective, for the future of the humankind. The long term perspective would entail discussion pertaining to planning spanning 100 to 500 years.
