New York, 7 December 2021 (TDI): The government of Iceland has joined the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as the newest Climate Promise funding partner on the 6th of December 2021. Iceland funded approximately US $1.2 million to (UNDP) for succoring endangered countries on climate change.

UNDP’s Climate Promise:
The UNDP’s Climate Promise is the largest development offer for states in order to fulfill their national promises to the Paris agreement. The initiative assists around 120 countries along with its partners, which represents 80% of the world’s developed countries. States captivate government and society stakeholders in defining their national climate pledge known as National Determined Contributions (NDC) which has been submitted by 89 countries to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner said, “We warmly welcome Iceland’s support as it joins the next chapter of UNDP’s Climate Promise, which is assisting communities on the frontline of climate change to respond and adapt to this ever-increasing threat. Nationally Determined Contributions represent a country’s sovereign investment plan to address the climate emergency. They are also a valuable policy instrument to drive forward wider sustainable development. Through the Climate Promise, we will also be able to surface and scale-up homegrown climate solutions that will speed up progress towards the objectives of the Paris Agreement and the Global Goals.”

Furthermore, while signing the contribution, Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Development Cooperation of Iceland Pordis Kolbrun R. Gylfadottir said, “Climate change is a global threat which countries must respond to collectively”.
“Iceland is answering the call of developing countries, most recently heard at COP26; by significantly increasing its contributions to climate finance. UNDP’s Climate Promise is a strategically important program, which we are happy to support. We look forward to this new partnership with UNDP,” he added.
The partners have already allocated the new contribution of the Government of Iceland for a new phase of the initiative. However, the contribution is more than US$20 million. They have designed this initiative for the NDC Partnership contribution. UNDP is one of the sustainable facilitators.
