Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein visits Canada

Ottawa, 20 March 2024 (TDI): Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein visited Canada. During his visit, he met with the staff of the Iraqi Embassy in Ottawa, as well as Canadian officials.

He started his visit by meeting at the Iraqi Embassy to discuss bilateral relations between Iraq and Canada. The embassy’s staff briefed the Minister on the Iraqi community in Canada. The Foreign Minister called on the embassy staff to provide the best services for their compatriots.

Hussein continued his visit to Canada by meeting with the Minister of National Defense, Bill Blair. The two sides discussed the Canadian support to Iraq in its fight against the Daesh terrorist organization.

Further, they emphasized the importance of the Global Coalition and NATO mission in the war against terrorism. Two ministers concluded the meeting by discussing the consequences of the ongoing war in Gaza.

Canadian Support to Iraq

Later, the Chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Peter M. Boehm, hosted the Iraqi Foreign Minister at his office in Ottawa.

Hussein and Boehm stressed the importance of exchanging parliamentary visits between two countries and the Canadian experience in the federal system of governance. Boehm expressed the keenness to support Iraq in all fields.

Hussein also met with Ahmed Hussen, the Minister of International Development. Ministers discussed the elevation of bilateral relations in the fields of energy, gas, agriculture, mining, tourism and climate change.

Minister Hussein expressed gratitude for the Canadian government’s re-providing funds to the UNRWA. He also stressed the importance of Canadian companies in Iraq, giving them a fertile environment for investments and sustainable development.

Ultimately, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly hosted his Iraqi counterpart, Fuad Hussein, at her office in Ottawa. Ministers discussed the promotion of bilateral relations between their states and reviewed the issues of common interests.

In addition, both ministers supported UNRWA and highlighted the benefits of federal governance for the federal system in Iraq.
