Tehran (TDI): Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated once again after both sides exchanged military strikes over the weekend, highlighting the fragile nature of ongoing efforts to negotiate a broader agreement to end months of conflict.
According to the US military, American forces carried out strikes on Iranian military targets along the Gulf coast in response to what it described as hostile actions by Iran, including the reported downing of a US MQ-1 drone operating over international waters. The United States Central Command said its aircraft targeted Iranian air defense systems, a ground control station, and two attack drones that allegedly posed threats to maritime traffic in the region.
In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that it had launched attacks against a US air base involved in operations against southern Iran. Iranian officials did not specify the location of the targeted facility.
Meanwhile, reports from Kuwait indicated that air defense systems were intercepting missiles and drones as warning sirens sounded in several areas. Kuwaiti authorities did not immediately provide detailed information regarding the attacks.

Despite the military exchanges, US President Donald Trump maintained that negotiations with Tehran were continuing and expressed confidence that a deal could eventually be reached. He said Iran was interested in an agreement and suggested that ongoing political debate in Washington was complicating diplomatic efforts.
The latest confrontation comes despite a ceasefire that has largely been in place since April. Although the truce has reduced large-scale hostilities, both sides have continued to engage in periodic military actions while diplomats attempt to negotiate a more durable settlement.
A major focus of the negotiations remains Iran’s nuclear program. Washington insists that any final agreement must ensure Tehran cannot develop a nuclear weapon, while Iranian officials continue to deny seeking such capabilities and demand sanctions relief as part of any settlement.
Another key issue is the future of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy transit routes. Disruptions in the waterway have contributed to higher global energy prices and increased uncertainty in international markets.

Regional tensions have also been complicated by the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced expanded military operations, while US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been engaged in diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions between Israel and Lebanon.
Analysts say the latest exchange underscores the delicate balance between diplomacy and military pressure. While negotiations continue to advance in some areas, recurring military incidents demonstrate how quickly the situation could deteriorate if key disagreements remain unresolved.
