Iranian FM, UN Chief Discuss Gaza Ceasefire, Yemen Crisis

Tehran (TDI): Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi held a phone call with António Guterres, Secretary‑General of the United Nations, on Monday, to discuss “regional developments, including the situation in Gaza and Yemen.”

According to an Iranian Foreign Ministry statement, Araghchi raised the issue of ceasefire violation by Israel, as its strikes in Gaza on Sunday killed at least 44 Palestinians. He said that it is the “responsibility of the international community to prevent continued violations of the ceasefire.”

He also condemned what he called “Israeli regime’s aggression” in Yemen, calling for enhanced cooperation with the UN to restore regional security and promote stability in the region.

“Guterres for his part thanked the Islamic Republic of Iran for its efforts in these matters and called for continued diplomatic consultations to achieve stability and security in Yemen and the broader region,” the statement read.

After the Sunday strikes, the Israeli military said it had resumed enforcing the ceasefire after targeting Hamas positions.

According to Israel, the strikes came in response to gunfire directed at its troops, marking the most serious incident since the truce began nine days ago. Hamas denied involvement in any such incident.

The ceasefire, which took effect on October 10, paused more than two years of intense Israeli assault against civilians in Gaza; which Iran denounced all along.

But Netanyahu’s refusal to open Rafah crossing and Israel’s violation of ceasefire once again are jeopardizing the fragile peace effort in the hunger-struck enclave.

According to the requirement of the first phase of ceasefire, Hamas returned all 20 living hostages to Israel along with 12 dead hostages; in response to which Israel freed 2000 Palestinian prisoners.
