Islamabad, 20 December 2021 (TDI): The Indonesian Foreign Minister, Menteri Luar Negeri Republik Indonesia, Retno Marsudi was in Islamabad to attend the 17th OIC Extraordinary Session. The Session was held on the behest of Saudi Arabia to discuss the Afghanistan crisis.

Meeting with Representative of Taliban

During her stay, she held various meetings on the sidelines of the OIC Summit. In one of her official meetings, she called on the Representative of Taliban, Amir Khan Muttaqi. The two discussed various issues pertaining to the humanitarian situation, women empowerment, and education in Afghanistan.

The agenda of the OIC Summit was to discuss the dire situation in Afghanistan and the looming threat of a humanitarian crisis in the country ever since the US forces withdrew from Afghanistan. Ergo, the diplomatic engagements of the Indonesian Foreign Minister revolved around discussing the Afghan situation.

Meeting with Special Representatives

In that regard, she also met with the Special Representative of Germany for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Jasper Wieck. The meeting with the German Envoy was prior to the Extraordinary Session of OIC.

Aside from the German Special Representative, she also discussed the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Afghanistan with the Special Representative of the United States (US) for Afghanistan, Thomas West.

Organization of Islamic Cooperation

After the United Nations (UN), the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is the second-largest organization with 57 states spread over four continents, as members. It is an organization that collectively represents the Muslim world.

The role of the OIC is to protect and safeguard the interests of the Muslim world in the spirit of fostering international harmony and peace as well as among diverse people of the world.

The OIC was established on 12th Rajab 1389 Hijra (25 September 1969) as per the decision of the historic summit which took place in Rabat, Kingdom of Morocco. The decision was made in the wake of the criminal arson of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem.

The 17th Extraordinary Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers was held on 19th December in Islamabad, to discuss the prevalent situation in neighboring Afghanistan.
