Sanaa, 31 December 2021 (TDI): The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Yemen provided food assistance to 500 newly-displaced families. This is because the critical humanitarian crisis and war happening in Yemen forced families to move from Marib to receive assistance.

Therefore, together with the Yemen Red Crescent, the ICRC continuously provides food, medical aid, and relief to the Yemeni population. Especially civilians and families recently displaced since the outbreak of the civil war in 2015.
ICRC work in Yemen
However, the work of the International Red Cross in Yemeni territory dates back to 1962. The ICRC has been carrying out special protection for people caught in the middle of a civil war. For example, the Committee directs most of its efforts to economic security in Yemen.
The ICRC describes it as the ability of people to meet their own needs with dignity. That way, the Committee just contributed in December with more than 590 families affected by the conflict in Yemen. They received food and healthcare assistance.

In addition, the ICRC has also provided medical and surgical supplies to a hospital in Yemen. Not to mention personal protective equipment and hygiene materials for the country’s professional staff in medicine.

To do this, it is important to note that all donations received by the ICRC must follow precise standards. So while the Committee relies on voluntary public and private contributions, all of its resources for aid are high-quality items.

Yemen Red Crescent’s solid commitment
On the other hand, there is the Yemen Red Crescent’s hard work. This society, as part of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, has participated in major humanitarian initiatives in Yemen.
Take, for example, that the ICRC has launched a hygiene and awareness campaign in the Sanhan district. They have also prepared capacity-building workshops for the Yemeni community. They are about prevention and response to risks and emergencies.

Not to mention the recently launched project related to saving education in the Sana’a governorates. In this program, the goal aims to provide a quality educational environment and curriculum to almost 10,000 students in Yemen.

In summary, the various humanitarian aid activities carried out in Yemen demonstrate the commitment of the individuals and organizations involved. The ICRC, together with the Yemen Red Crescent Society, seeks to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people while providing them with new opportunities to move forward.

However, there is still much work to be done. As Fabrizio Carboni, ICRC regional director for the MENA, mentioned in a press release, “significant unmet humanitarian needs remain, even among newly displaced people.”
“We urge all parties to take every possible measure to protect civilians, their property, and essential civilian infrastructure in Marib”, he pointed out.
