Global Coalition Political Director Meeting

In Hague, the United States and the Netherlands conducted a meeting of the political directors of the Small Group of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS on December 7, 2022.

Allies were briefed on group efforts to combat Daesh globally by Dutch Political Director Marcel de Vink and US Deputy Special Envoy to the Coalition Ian McCary.

Members of the coalition review current initiatives to combat Daesh/ISIS in Syria and Iraq, such as the dire humanitarian and security needs in the al-Hol camp and detention facilities in northeast Syria, which continue to be a serious issue in the area and demand long-term sustainable solutions.

The UN Global Framework for Prosecution, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration of Iraqi Returnees, as well as screening opportunities provided by INTERPOL to improve background and security checks, were topics of discussion during the meeting on repatriation.

In order to properly use comparative methodologies and utilize the Coalition, members of the Coalition announced intentions to work with other significant regional and multinational projects, including the Coalition for the Sahel.

Work in areas like border security, biometric data, and battlefield evidence are a few examples of how to interface with African governments and support civilian-led initiatives to destroy ISIS and other terrorist groups there.

Participants also provided information on the ISIS-Khorasan threat and the ensuing border security challenges in South and Central Asia in order to foster awareness for forthcoming Coalition sessions.

This included streamlining information sharing through I-24/7 secure communication channels.

In light of a changing threat environment, the growth of ISIS, and other terrorist threats, the Coalition continues to modify its counterterrorism measures.

Moreover, the alliance vowed to hold ISIS terrorists responsible through the criminal justice system and to permanently eradicate ISIS wherever it exists.
