Georgia Elected as a Member of Human Rights Council

New York, 12 October 2022 (TDI): Georgia has been elected as a member of the Council of Human Rights. United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) held the polls on 11th October 2022.

The Assembly has elected fourteen countries to the HRC for the term of 2023-2025. These countries are Algeria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Chile, Costa Rica, and Georgia.

Germany, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives, Morocco, Romania, South Africa, Sudan, and Viet Nam have also been selected. Georgia got 178 votes in the polls.

Ilia Darchiashvili, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia expressed gratitude to the member states of the United Nations, for supporting Georgia in these polls. He said that Georgia will collaborate with all stakeholders to meet the conceived task.

The Minister aimed that the country will continue to reiterate its commitment & contribution to international determinations for the protection & promotion of human rights.

An Introduction to Human Rights Council

The Human Rights Council is an inter-governmental body, working within the system of the United Nations Organization. It is liable to strengthen the protection and promotion of human rights all over the world.

The Council addresses the various states of affairs of human rights violations. It also offers policy recommendations to deal with the particular dilemma accordingly.

The Human Rights Council consists of forty-seven member states. United Nations General Assembly directly elects these members through secret balloting.

Each selected member serves for a tenure of three years. After completing two consecutive periods, the member state is not eligible to partake in the election instantly. Membership in the council is based on equitable geographical distribution.

The seats in the council are allocated in the following regions as per mentioned number: thirteen seats for the Group of African States, thirteen seats for the Group of Asia-Pacific States, six seats for the Group of Eastern European States, eight seats for the Group of Latin American and the Caribbean States, and seven seats for the Group of Western European and other States.
