After the illegal and unilateral actions of August 5th, 2019, the people of occupied Jammu & Kashmir were subjected to an unprecedented 36-month military siege and severe restrictions on their fundamental freedoms.
The Foreign Secretary elaborated on the Jammu and Kashmir conflict’s implications for world peace and security, as well as for law and human rights.
Briefings on the critical human rights situation in IIOJK were given to Ambassadors. India’s illegal and unilateral acts on August 5, 2019, were clearly in contravention of international law, particularly the Fourth Geneva Convention, and were intended to undermine the internationally acknowledged disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir and change the demographic makeup of IIOJK.

Pakistan, the people of Kashmir, and the international world all vehemently opposed these actions. The Foreign Secretary emphasized that India’s failure to implement Security Council resolutions was the primary reason the Jammu and Kashmir dispute had remained unresolved.
The resolutions state that which stated that the final disposition of the State of Jammu and Kashmir shall be made in accordance with the will of the people expressed through the democratic method of a free and impartial plebiscite conducted under the auspices of the United Nations.
He stressed that Pakistan’s efforts to maintain peace along the Line of Control (LOC), save priceless Kashmiri lives, and lessen the suffering of Kashmiris living on both sides of the LOC was best demonstrated by the ceasefire agreement that was reached on February 25, 2021.
Sadly, Indian actions on August 5, 2019, have hampered our attempts to promote peace in the region. India has the responsibility of fostering an atmosphere that allowed for meaningful engagement.
The Foreign Secretary underscored that the international community must put pressure on India to stop violating human rights, stop demographic changes and its actions on August 5 in IIOJK, and allow the people of Kashmir to exercise their right to self-determination in accordance with the relevant UNSC Resolutions.
