Dili, 12 March 2022 (TDI): The incumbent Foreign Minister of Timor-Leste, Adaljiza Magno met Ambassador Olexander Nechytaylo, the Ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Malaysia, the Republic of Philippines, and the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.

The two officials discussed the current situation in Ukraine. Ambassador Olexander Nechytaylo thanked and appreciated the support of Timor-Leste for his country against Russia.

Timor Leste has condemned the Russian atrocities and aggression as well as the invasion of Ukraine and has supported the United Nations General Assembly resolution to reaffirm Ukrainian sovereignty, independence, and integrity.

Timor Leste is an observer of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the Pacific Alliance. It is also a member of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, International Monetary Fund, and Asian Development Bank.

It is located in Southeast Asia on the southernmost edge of the Indonesian archipelago, Northwest of Australia. United Nations recognized Timor-Leste then known as East Timor after its independence on the 20th of May 2002.

Before its independence, this region had been a Portuguese colony till 1975 and was under Indonesia’s sovereignty from 1976-1999. Timor-Leste has a history of great struggles sacrifices, salivary, colonialism, bloodshed, and aggression.

Timor Leste-Ukraine ties

Timor Leste and Ukraine enjoy close bilateral relationships. Since 2005 the bilateral relationships with Timor Leste have been placed under the jurisdiction of the Embassy of Ukraine in Malaysia.

Ukraine made significant contributions to the support of the movement for the independence of Timor Leste setting the peace and the establishment of a United Nations presence in the country.

12 representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine participated in the United Nations integrated mission in Timor-Leste which was a significant factor for the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

In reciprocation on the 27th of March 2014, Timor-Leste did not participate in the vote on the United Nations General Assembly resolution on “the territorial integrity of Ukraine” about the Russian aggression against Ukraine and illegal annexation of Crimea.

Despite the fact that the Democratic Republic of Timor Leste is currently the largest recipient of international assistance. Significant resources and reserves of oil and gas give a reason to anticipate its rapid economic development in the next decade.

The ties between Timor Leste and Ukraine in the fields of power engineering, agriculture, and education could be a mutually beneficial journey. Timor Leste has proven to be a relevant voice for recently formed democracy by condemning the Russian unprovoked aggression invasion of Ukraine.

Amidst the recent crisis in the region, Timor Leste has openly condemned Russia for its outrageous advancement in Ukraine. Timor Leste supported the United Nations General Assembly resolution to affirm Ukrainian sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.
