Islamabad, 15 March 2022 (TDI): Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi spoke to the United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG), Antonio Guterres.

The conversation took place through a phone call. The agenda of the meeting was to exchange views on current regional as well as global issues. The Pakistani Foreign Minister briefed the UNSG about the so-called “accidental” firing of a missile by India on 9 March 2022.

The missile fell to the ground in Pakistan’s territory. Foreign Minister Qureshi emphasized that it was an outright violation of the airspace of Pakistan. Likewise, it reflects India’s disregard for aviation safety along with regional peace and stability.

He also emphasized that Pakistan has continued to act with responsibility and restraint. The Foreign Minister pointed out multiple shortcomings as well as technical lapses of a serious nature in India’s management of strategic weapons.

In a response to the Indian irresponsibilities, the Foreign Minister accentuated Pakistan’s demand for a joint probe into the incident. He enunciated that the incident was in line with India’s irresponsible demeanor and ought to be handled by the global community, including the UN Security Council.

Aside from that, the Pakistani Foreign Minister and Secretary-General Guterres also deliberated upon Pakistan-UN collaboration in the realm of Peacekeeping. The two officials also discussed overcoming the challenges posed by the threefold international crisis of COVID-19, Climate Change, and Sustainable Development.

Foreign Minister Qureshi also shared Pakistan’s perspective on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine along with its adverse economic impact on developing countries. He highlighted Pakistan’s efforts in support of resolution via diplomacy and dialogue.

Furthermore, Shah Mehmood Qureshi highlighted that Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, had been stressing from the onset that a conflict anywhere in the world increases the suffering of the developing countries.

Whilst the Secretary-General of the UN on his part enlightened the Foreign Minister about recent ventures being explored by the UN to tackle the worldwide sky-rocketing inflation because of the situation in Ukraine.

He also accentuated the necessity to jointly undertake measures to counter the disruptions in global supply chains that lead to food and energy shortages, particularly in developing countries.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi also lauded the Secretary-General’s efforts in this context along with assuring him of Pakistan’s complete support and collaboration in these endeavors.
