Islamabad, 6 October 2021 (TDI): The Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi met the Deputy ty Foreign Minister of Iran, Dr. Ali Bagheri Kani.
Dr. Kani is on his debut visit to Pakistan since he assumed office. It is also a first visit of any senior Iranian official since Ebrahim Raisi became the president earlier this year.
Both dignitaries exchanged views on bilateral relations and expressed that through high-level exchanges the ties are becoming stronger. While showing commitment to foster trade and economic relations, they stressed that the regular convening of the Joint Economic Commission and Joint Trade Committee would be fruitful in consolidating economic ties.
Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood highlighted need for coordination between Iran and Pakistan for mutual interests. In this regard, it is crucial to implement the steps agreed by Prime Minister Imran Khan and Iran’s President Raisi in a meeting on the sidelines of the SCO Summit 2021 in Dushanbe.
Regarding the present situation in Afghanistan, Shah Mahmood underscored the need of providing humanitarian support to the people of Afghanistan. Iran now is also on the same page as Pakistan, and it is also providing humanitarian support to Afghanis. Both officials showed resolve towards maintaining economic engagement in Afghanistan to avert a humanitarian crisis.
Shah Mahmood applauded Iran for supporting the right of self-determination of the people of Kashmiris. Both sides committed to foster bilateral relations.
