Foreign Minister of Maldives new president of UNGA

8 June 2021(TDI): Today, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Maldives, Abdullah Shahid, won the election of Presidency of the 76th session of the United Nations General assembly (UNGA). Maldives has contested for the first time today and has won the elections. Minister Abdullah Shahid won the election by an outstanding margin of 143 votes.

On winning the elections, the president of UNGA expressed his gratitude in the following words; “I am deeply humbled by the trust and confidence you have placed in me. Humbled by the honor you have bestowed on my country, the Maldives”. He expressed that today is the beginning of the presidency of hope.

He further professed that a transparent, coherent, operative, productive, coherent United Nations can meet contemporary demands. Well-coordinated and cooperative structure of the United Nations and its organs will be functional in current times. He promised to warrant more space in the General Assembly, for the youth. He further proclaimed to advocate for gender equality and against gender discrimination. He expressed his view to engaging all stakeholders in the discussions of the General Assembly. He further pledged to bridge the existing gap between the people and the United Nation, to truly portray the Charter’s initial three words, “We, the Peoples”.
