Foreign Minister Pakistan discusses Ukraine with EU High Representative

Islamabad, 4 March 2022 (TDI): The Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, spoke over the phone with Josep Borell, the Vice President of the European Commission and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy on Thursday. The two leaders exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine and the Emergency Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

During the discussion, the Foreign Minister recalled that the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan had expressed sadness and regret regarding the recent situation between Russia and Ukraine and expressed Pakistan’s hope that diplomacy and dialogue could prevent a military clash.

Qureshi highlighted the negative repercussions of conflict in developing countries. He reiterated that the priority of Pakistan and Prime Minister Khan is on a diplomatic settlement of the issue.

He also highlighted the significance of finding a solution in accordance with international law and the UN Charter’s ideals. Borrell acknowledged the importance of continued efforts for finding a diplomatic solution to the Russia-Ukraine crisis.

The parties had a constructive discussion over the matter and shared their concerns. Qureshi informed the EU high representative about Pakistan’s principled position which is based on the promotion of peaceful resolution of problems via dialogue and diplomacy and that Pakistan has constantly emphasized the need for de-escalation, renewed negotiations, sustained dialogue and continuous diplomacy.

He also brought to light the significance of a settlement based on applicable multilateral agreements, international law, and UN Charter principles.

In addition to this, High Representative Borell gave his take on the issue, calling attention to the conflict’s impact on world peace and security, as well as the global economy. He recognized the importance of continuing to work toward a diplomatic settlement.

The call ended on mutual agreement between both parties to remain engaged about the Ukraine situation.
