Washington (TDI): United States federal agents shot and wounded two people in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday, intensifying a wave of unrest over immigration enforcement that has swept several cities this week.
The shooting occurred during a “targeted vehicle stop” by federal immigration officers in the Hazelwood area of East Portland, according to local police and federal authorities, who said the driver allegedly tried to use his vehicle to attack agents.
Both the male driver and a female passenger were injured and later found seeking help about three miles from the initial scene before being taken to hospital; their conditions have not been publicly disclosed.
The Portland Police Bureau said its officers were not involved in the confrontation and urged the public to remain calm as details continue to emerge.
The incident comes on the heels of nationwide protests over the fatal shooting of a woman by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis a day earlier, an event that has already sparked vigils and demonstrations in multiple states.

Portland has long been a flashpoint for dissent against federal immigration actions, with critics arguing that aggressive enforcement undermines civil liberties and fuels fear in immigrant communities.
Elected officials in Oregon’s largest city quickly condemned Thursday’s shooting, calling for an immediate halt to ICE operations pending a full independent investigation.
Mayor Keith Wilson said Portland should not serve as “a training ground” for militarized agents and that increasing federal force risks eroding constitutional protections. City council members echoed his demand for accountability and an end to aggressive federal tactics.
The Department of Homeland Security has defended the actions of its officers, asserting that agents were forced to fire in self-defense after the vehicle posed a threat, and has cited alleged links between the vehicle’s occupants and criminal activity.
The FBI has taken over the investigation into the shooting, and authorities are piecing together a clearer timeline as public attention remains fixed on the broader debate over ICE’s role and tactics.
The twin incidents in Minneapolis and Portland have angered people across the United States, where the Trump administration continues to defend the actions of federal forces against immigrants.
