UK Ex-Envoy Peter Mandelson Released on Bail in Epstein Probe

London (TDI): Former British envoy and veteran politician Peter Mandelson was released on bail in the early hours of Tuesday following his arrest in connection with the ongoing investigation into links with disgraced US financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The arrest came only days after Prince Andrew was detained in a related probe. Mandelson, 72, was taken into custody on Monday evening on suspicion of misconduct in public office, reportedly concerning allegations that he shared sensitive government documents with Epstein during his ministerial tenure, including around the 2008 financial crisis. The Metropolitan Police confirmed he was released on bail pending further investigation.

Images broadcast on UK media showed Mandelson leaving his north London home accompanied by two individuals after police raided his properties earlier this month. No specifics were given regarding which documents are under scrutiny, though reports indicate the investigation ties into the broader release of Epstein-related materials.

The arrest follows Mandelson’s dismissal as UK envoy to Washington by Prime Minister Keir Starmer in September, after documents revealed the extent of his friendship with Epstein. His appointment had already prompted the resignation of two top aides in Starmer’s office and drew criticism from multiple political quarters.

Law firm Mishcon de Reya, representing Mandelson, issued a statement expressing deep regret, noting that he did not fully understand Epstein’s criminality until after the financier’s death in 2019, and apologized for the harm caused to victims. The UK government plans to release documents related to Mandelson’s vetting for his Washington posting in early March, potentially escalating scrutiny on senior ministers and the prime minister.

Mandelson, who also served as European Union trade commissioner and recently resigned from the House of Lords, faces mounting reputational and financial pressures. His advisory firm, Global Counsel, ceased trading and entered administration last week, losing several major clients including Barclays, Tesco, and the Premier League.
