European Commission President says climate finance should step up

New York, 21 September 2021 (TDI): On the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen stated that they need to step up climate funding to help the highly vulnerable countries in the transition efforts, with $100 billion worth funding at least.

Europe contributes more than $25 billion each year and will continue to give more in the future.

The Conference of the Parties (COP26), according to President Von der Leyen, will be a defining moment for everyone. Green Deal for the EU emitters must have such solid strategies in place in time.

The European Green Deal is a series of policy measures spearheaded by the European Commission with the ultimate goal of achieving climate neutrality in Europe by 2050. The 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, commonly known as COP26, is the 26th conference of the United Nations Climate Change Organization. It is set to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, between October 31 and 12 November 2021.

President Der Leyen also added that it is not too late; we must act now to address mitigation, adaptation, and financing. The EU is on pace to fulfill the targets set out in the Paris Agreement. If EU partners follow the EU’s lead, the world will be able to stay below 1.5°C of warming.
