Washington, 15 October 2021 (TDI): Josep Borrell, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of EU, met with Kathleen Hicks, United States Deputy Secretary of Defense. The two spoke on the US-EU alliance and the transatlantic security issues they face.

According to VP Borrell, they addressed EU-US security cooperation and the need for a stronger and more effective European defense. Such cooperation would contribute to transatlantic and worldwide security, as well as to address the constantly changing security challenges that the two will confront.
He also emphasized that the EU’s security and defense strategy needs a new impetus, which is the overarching goal of their Strategic Compass. Strengthening EU Member States’ capabilities and resolving key capacity gaps would help the EU.
It will also benefit the US and NATO. Sec. Hicks also acknowledged the need for greater European unity for the Euro-Atlantic region’s security and prosperity.
