About Belgium National Day
The National Day marks the separation and independence of Belgium from the Netherlands. Initially, the day was celebrated on 27 September to commemorate the withdrawal of the Dutch military from Brussels in September 1830.
However, the date of National Day was changed to July 21 in 1890 to honor the King’s accession to the throne. On 21 July 1831, Leopard I took oath as a King and first monarch of the country. He established the constitutional monarchy.
Celebrations on the National Day
To celebrate the day, a series of events occur in Brussels annually, attended by more than 100,000 citizens. Moreover, the central bank, the Parliament chambers of Belgium, and other government institutions are also open to the public.
Historically, the day is marked by the speech of the King. The day begins with a Te Deum at the Cathedral of St. Gudula and St. Michael, also attended by the King and other officials.
In the afternoon, Belgian police and armed forces conduct a parade around the Brussels park in front of the Belgium Royal Palace. Furthermore, the crowd also witnesses a flypast by the Belgian air force and a fireworks display in the evening.
After 2019, the celebrations did not take place on a large scale due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. However, this year, Belgians celebrated the day with full zeal.
Moreover, the King of Belgium, Phillip Leopold Marie, Queen Mathilde, and their family arrived at the Cathedral of Saints Michel and Gudule for Te Deum.
