Didier Drogba appointed as new WHO Ambassador

Geneva, 19 October 2021 (TDI): The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced the appointment of Didier Drogba. WHO appointed Drogba as Goodwill Ambassador for Sports & Health.

Drogba, who is from Côte d’Ivoire, has to support WHO. That support is to promote the guidance of WHO, on the benefits of physicial activity. Drogba will also highlight the value of sports, especially towards the younger generations.

He was a football player with the Chelsea, and also was two-time African Footballer of the Year. Drogba has also participated in many health campaigns, like anti-malaria, HIV control, and finally prevention. During the announcement, Drogba expressed his gratitude to WHO, to team up, and support its work.

That work is to help people reach the highest level of health possible. Drogba also mentioned that he has benefited from the power of sports, for his healthy life. Also, reaffirmed his commitment to work with the Organization.

Tedros referred to Drogba as a dedicated advocate for the health, and sustainable development of communities. Adhanom also stated that his support to WHO can help curb the noncommunicable diseases growth. That would be achieved by the promotion of healthy lifestyles, that include the benefits of physical activity.

Tedros expressed that the Organization was pleased to have Drogba playing for WHO. Moreover, will score goals to help communities, for their physical and mental health. The note mentioned that Drogba will support also the mobilization of the international community.

This is to promote sports as essential means to improve physical, and mental health. Also to improve the social well-being of all people. Finally, the announcement of Drogba will also help in the recovery efforts of Covid-19.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

According to WHO, four in five adolescents, and one in four adults, do not do have enough physical activity. Also, it mentions that regular physical activity,  helps to reduce the risk of several illnesses.

DROGBA’s APPOINTMENT
The appointment of Drogba as a WHO Goodwill Ambassador, was during the announcement ceremony of the Healthy 2022 World Cup-Creating Legacy for Sport and Health. This is the partnership between WHO, FIFA, and Qatar’s representatives.

Finally, with his appointment, Drogba joins other WHO Ambassadors. Those Ambassadors are the Brazilian, Alisson Becker, Michael Bloomberg, Cynthia Germanotta, and Gordon Brown.
