Beijing, 31 May 2022 (TDI): The Chinese President, Xi Jinping met the newly elected Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), John Lee.

John Lee is the appointed sixth-term Chief Executive of the HKSAR. The meeting took place at Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing, on Monday afternoon.

During the meeting, President Xi congratulated Lee on winning the election as well as on his appointment by the central government. He lauded Lee for his relentless love for the country and the HKSAR.

Likewise, Xi Jinping commended the newly elected Chief Executive of HKSAR for his initiative, his readiness to take on responsibilities, and for fulfilling his duties in diverse positions.

President Xi pointed out Lee’s contribution to safeguarding national security as well as Hong Kong’s stability & prosperity, along with the central authorities, and having full trust in him and giving full affirmation to him.

The Chinese President highlighted that the HKSAR successfully held elections of the Election Committee, the sixth-term Chief Executive, and the seventh-term Legislative Council, under the new electoral system since last year.

Consequently, it has been established that the latest electoral system played an assertive role to ensure the implementation of the principle of patriots administering Hong Kong.

In the same vein, it has ensured the people of Hong Kong by facilitating a good environment to exercise their rights as masters of the region, where people from all walks of life and all social strata collaborate for Hong Kong’s development.

Moreover, the system is democratic and political along with being in line with the principle of One Country, Two Systems. As a result, it served the realities of Hong Kong as well as its needs for development.

Along these lines, the President of China highlighted that the prevalent year marked the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland.

The practice of One Country, Two Systems in Hong Kong has been a resounding success, in spite of the myriad challenges over the past 25 years.

The resolve of the central authorities to faithfully & completely implement the One Country, Two Systems principle is unwavering. Furthermore, Hong Kong has restored order and is now at a critical stage of progressing toward prosperity.

Lastly, President Xi enunciated that he believed the new HKSAR government to bring refreshing changes to the governance of HKSAR, opening a new chapter of development. Han Zheng and Xia Baolong as well as other senior officials attended the meeting.
