Beijing, 24 December 2021 (TDI): President of China, Xi Jinping met with the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Carrie Lam. Carrie Lam was visiting Beijing to report on work in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).
During the meeting, President Xi stated that Hong Kong has consolidated its accomplishments in reforming the situation and order. In the past year, the situation has improved immensely.
So much so, that the region has achieved noteworthy outcomes in its COVID-19 response.
Xi Jinping accentuated that Hong Kong has maintained social stability and steadily salvaged its economy. The President said that Carrie Lam has guided the HKSAR to make systematic advancements and modifications to the region’s electoral system as per the appropriate decision of the National People’s Congress as well as pertinent legislation of the NPC Standing Committee.
The five-year term of Carrie Lam will end in June, next year. According to the Chinese President, the Chief Executive of HKSAR has taken vigorous measures to facilitate the integration of Hong Kong into the overall development of the country along with comprehensively deepening its collaboration and exchanges with mainland China.
In addition, Xi Jinping also underscored that practice has ascertained that the new electoral system adheres to the ‘one country, two systems’ principle and is in sync with the realities of Hong Kong.
China released White Paper on Hong Kong
Earlier this week, China also released a White Paper on Hong Kong titled “Hong Kong: Democratic Progress Under the Framework of One Country, Two Systems.” The State Council Information Office released the paper after the general election for the seventh-term Legislative Council of Hong Kong.
The White paper portrays the real picture of the political development of Hong Kong along with discussing the development of democracy in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).
The visit of the Chief Executive is the year-end official trip to mainland China. Whilst there, she also met with the Chinese Prime Minister, Li Keqiang.
