New York, 26 August 2021 (TDI): On Wednesday, the Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, Geng Shuang, spoke for assistance by the international community to Iraq in the forthcoming elections and fight against terrorism and coronavirus.
As the election in Iraq is approaching, the Chinese envoy told the Security Council that China advocates the step taken by the United Nations (UN) in aiding Iraq’s electoral process. Geng also said that China expects that the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) will play an advantageous role in the elections.
Further, while highlighting the increased incidents of terrorism in Iraq, he called for global support to Baghdad to maintain the situation of peace and stability. Moreover, he urged the international community to aid Baghdad in its recovery from the aftershocks of COVID-19.
Lastly, China assured cooperation with other states and organizations in providing aid to Iraq. In this regard, China has recently sent a batch of vaccines to Iraq, which was the third COVID-19 vaccine batch sent by Beijing.
