Chinese and Iranian Foreign Ministers meet at SCO Council

Astana, 22 May 2024 (TDI): During the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers meeting, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Mahdi Safari on Tuesday.

Additionally, Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, reaffirmed his thoughts and prayers and compassion for the loss of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in a recent helicopter crash.

Moreover, Wang expressed that the global community was very disturbed by the regrettable event. He further stated that Iran has suffered the loss of exceptional leaders while China has lost valuable friends and allies.

In addition, Wang stated that Chinese President Xi Jinping conveyed a message of condolence to Iranian leaders.

According to Wang, China expresses unwavering support for Iran during this challenging period. China believes that under the guidance of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, the Iranian government and people will transform their sorrow into resilience. However, they will steadfastly pursue their established strategies and uphold national stability and progress.

Moreover, Wang also stated that: Irrespective of any changes in the situation, China would persist in enhancing strategic cooperation with Iran, protecting shared interests, and striving for peace in the region and the globe, he stated. 

During the meeting, Safari expressed gratitude to President Xi and Wang for promptly offering condolences on the unfortunate deaths of Raisi and Amir-Abdollahian. Safari also appreciated China’s unwavering support for Iran.

Additionally, Safari stressed that Iran’s internal and foreign policies will remain unaltered, and the country will persist in advancing the path of national development under the guidance of the supreme leader.

Moreover, Safari also stated that Iran highly values its connection with China and is dedicated to strengthening cooperation in several areas such as politics, economics, culture, and more. 

Lastly, he thanked the Chinese for their efforts to facilitate reconciliation between Iran and Saudi Arabia and conveyed Iran’s commitment to furthering the essential diplomatic processes to enhance relations with neighboring nations.
