United Nations (TDI): China supports all efforts conducive to peace talks in Ukraine, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi told the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Tuesday, and stressed that Gaza and the West Bank are “not a bargaining chip in political trade-offs”.
After Russian and US officials met in Saudi Arabia and agreed to move ahead with efforts to end the war in Ukraine, Wang told the UNSC: “China backs all efforts conducive to peace negotiations.”
He said China would continue to follow four points outlined by Chinese President Xi Jinping on what should be done.
China’s state news agency Xinhua listed these as respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations; adherence to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter; paying due regard to legitimate security concerns of all states, and backing efforts helpful in the peaceful settlement of the crisis.
Wang chaired a meeting of the 15-member UNSC on multilateralism as China is president for February.

Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia stated that with regard to efforts to war in Ukraine, it was becoming clear who genuinely advocates a more fair, more equal world, and who are living in the past and are trying to make their geopolitical agendas a reality.
“Any country claiming to act as a mediator in suggesting peace initiatives must understand what caused this war,” Nebenzia told the Security Council.
He said that the root cause of the conflict is disregard for Moscow’s security interests and a desire to “inflict a geopolitical defeat on Russia,” as well as the failure of government in Ukraine to respect the rights of its population.

On the Middle East, Wang said it was necessary to uphold the two-state solution.
US President Donald Trump caused outrage earlier this month when he announced that the US will take over the Gaza Strip and Gazans should be resettled elsewhere.
“Gaza and the West Bank are the homeland of Palestinians, not a bargaining chip in political trade-offs. The Palestinians governing Palestine is key principle that must be adopted in the post-conflict Gaza governance,” he said.
